History of Hay Walkers
Hay Walkers evolved from a talk/workshop by David Lovelace on local landscape history (of ancient woods, tracks etc) in the late 1980s. Originally we called ourselves Clifford and Cusop Footpaths and Bridleways Association. A small group got together to enable clearing and signing of local footpaths and bridleways which were in danger at that time of being lost altogether. Many local people were involved and later included folks from Hay, hence the change of name to Hay Walkers.
Another achievement was the production of a set of ten walks leaflets in the Hay and Cusop area. In later years the programme expanded to include weekend breaks walking coastal paths, not only in Wales but in Somerset and Devon too. It also became the custom to arrange a holiday abroad, usually in the Mediterranean, in early May and recent trips have included Greek Islands, one of which was Corfu where our club contributed a new walk for the Landscapes series of Sunflower Books. In early 2000 members began walking the complete Offas Dyke Path followed by others such as the Wye Valley Walk, Beacons Way and many more.
In recent years the Club has organised charity walks to raise funds for Longtown and Brecon Mountain Rescue Groups and for the BBCs Children-in-Need Charity.
